🔹 Long Vien Golf Club, Vientiane — 9.2/10

Long Vien is the most complete golf facility in Laos. According to Golfasian’s course profile, it was the first 27-hole complex in the country, with the original layout opening in 2012 and further holes added in 2016, playing to par 72 at 7,538 yards over the main combination, on paspalum turf maintained year round. The club sits in the Vientiane–Long Thanh special economic zone in Hadxaifong district, roughly 20 kilometres from the centre and about twenty minutes from Wattay airport. Floodlights allow night golf, which is rare in Laos. The Discover Laos course page notes that caddie use is compulsory and billed separately from the green fee.

Best for: executives, corporate tournaments, Korean and Vietnamese groups, confident players, a first round in Vientiane.

🔹 Luang Prabang Golf Club — 9.0/10

Luang Prabang Golf Club is where golf in Laos becomes a journey. The club’s own website gives 18 holes, par 72 and 7,443 yards, an opening date of 9 April 2011, a design by the Korean firm Sunjin Engineering & Architecture, and a location ten to fifteen minutes from both the historic town and the international airport. The same source states that the club hosted the Lao Open on the Asian PGA Tour in 2011 and 2012. The closing holes open onto the Mekong valley, and most visitors remember the view rather than the score.

Best for: couples, premium travellers, photographers, Asian tour groups, a heritage-and-golf itinerary.

🔹 Lakeview Vientiane Golf Club — 8.7/10

Lakeview is the modern face of golf in the capital. Golfasian credits the design to Nelson & Haworth, with an opening in 2016, 18 holes, par 72 and 7,153 yards, roughly fifteen minutes from central Vientiane. Man-made lakes frame every hole and raised greens are guarded by steep bunkering. It is the course to choose for an early round before a morning meeting in town.

🔹 Dansavanh Golf & Country Club, Nam Ngum — 8.0/10

Dansavanh is not a round after the office; it is an excursion. The 18-hole par-72 layout of about 7,107 yards runs along Nam Ngum lake in Thoulakhom district, roughly 60 kilometres north of Wattay airport, with water in play on many holes. The drive out and a lunch or an overnight stay turn the golf into a 24-hour break. Public listings for the club diverge on phone numbers and visitor conditions, so confirm the tee time directly before setting off.

Best for: weekends, groups of friends, team building, visitors who want to see Laos beyond the capital.

🔹 SEA Games Golf Club, Vientiane — 8.0/10

SEA Games Golf Club was built by the Korean group Boo Young for the 25th Southeast Asian Games, and the golf competition of those Games was held there from 11 to 14 December 2009, as recorded in the event archive for golf at the 2009 SEA Games. The club offers 27 holes in three loops at KM18, Ban Phokham, Xaythany district. It remains the clearest physical trace of the moment Laos entered regional competitive golf.

Best for: large groups, amateur competitions, players who want to vary nine-hole combinations.

🔹 Lao Country Club, Vientiane — 7.9/10

Lao Country Club, formerly associated with the Youth Garden Golf Course, belongs to the first generation of clubs in the capital and has since been substantially renovated. Public sources disagree on its par and yardage: tourist listings commonly give 18 holes at around 6,005 yards and par 71, while other directories give par 72 and a longer layout. That divergence is itself the practical lesson — ask the club for the current scorecard when you book. The course sits at KM14 on the Thadeua road, between Vientiane and the first Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge.

🔹 PhuBaChiang Golf & Resort, Pakse — 7.8/10

PhuBaChiang is the natural anchor for golf in southern Laos, combining an 18-hole course, a resort and a pool with mountain views around Pakse, in Champasak province. Formerly Lao Inter Golf Club, this 18-hole par-72 course designed by Robert McFarland opened in 2012, northwest of Wattay airport in Sikhottabong district. Its relatively generous fairways make it a sensible choice for mid to high handicaps and for a sociable round without ceremony.

Best for: intermediate players, mixed groups, residents of western Vientiane.

🔹 Savan Resorts Golf Club, Savannakhet — 7.6/10 provisional

Savan Resorts is the provincial project to watch. Golf Course Architecture reported on 30 June 2025 that the resort’s new nine-hole par-3 short course was designed by Nicklaus Design across 16 hectares, with three lakes created during construction, an island green at the eighth, night lighting on holes seven, eight and nine, and two pins per green so that the loop can be played as eighteen. Holes run from 70 to 272 yards, and preview play was scheduled for September 2025. The score stays provisional because published visitor conditions, opening hours and rates remain thin.

🔹 Vientiane KM6 Golf Club — 6.8/10

This nine-hole course on Route 13 North, cited as opened in 1993, belongs to the memory of golf in Vientiane. It is shorter and plainer than the others, and it suits practice, a first experience or a quick round with no protocol.

🔹 Courses to mention without overselling

Pakse Golf Club appears in older tourist documents at Ban Phatana, about four kilometres from central Pakse, but recent public information on maintenance and booking is too thin to rank it ahead of PhuBaChiang. Phoukewlom Mountains International Golf Resort, near the Golden Triangle economic zone in Bokeo, appears on public maps but has no detailed official page or independent visitor feedback, so it should be treated as an exploratory address to confirm before travelling. Vang Vieng, Thakhek and Xieng Khouang have no documented championship course at the date of this research.

3. How much does a round of golf cost in Laos in 2026?

Published green fees for Laos in 2026 run from roughly USD 35 for PhuBaChiang in Pakse to about USD 110 at Lakeview Vientiane. These are entry prices advertised on commercial booking platforms, not quotations, and the gap between an advertised green fee and the amount actually paid at the counter is where most disappointment happens.

Multi-day packages currently advertised give a further order of magnitude: roughly USD 490 to USD 575 for two or three rounds with two to four nights depending on the city and the inclusions, and around USD 1,000 to USD 1,200 for a week with four rounds. 4. Is Thatluang Lake Golf Resort open yet?

No. As of September 2026, the Faldo Design course at Thatluang Lake in Vientiane is not open to visitors, and any offer presenting it as playable should be treated with caution. The Asian Golf Industry Federation reported on 9 September 2026 that the resort is being prepared for launch before the end of 2026, that the course is an 18-hole par-70 layout of 6,007 yards shaped by Faldo Design, and that IMG has been appointed to manage the facility, which will also include a golf academy and a two-tier driving range. The project matters for four concrete reasons. It is the first Faldo Design course in Laos, which gives Vientiane an international signature. It sits inside the Thatluang Lake special economic zone, close to the centre, rather than an hour out of town. It is tied to a real-estate and business district rather than standing alone. And it is short by modern championship standards at 6,007 yards, which makes accuracy rather than distance the defining skill — a design choice that suits the corporate and mixed-ability groups Vientiane actually receives.

5. Why do business and golf meet so often in Vientiane?

Contracts are signed in offices; trust is often built on the course. Eighteen holes give three to four hours of conversation with no meeting room, no slide deck and no frontal pressure. You see how someone reacts to a bad shot, respects the rules, treats a caddie, waits their turn or helps a partner. In a business culture where the personal relationship carries real weight, those observations can be as informative as a formal meeting.

What can be observed is the infrastructure itself, and it tells a clear story: SEA Games Golf Club was built by a Korean group, Luang Prabang was designed by a Korean firm, and Long Vien offers a Korean-language interface. Korea is the most natural short-term golf market for Laos.

The European market is the one still to be invented. A European golfer who books Marrakech or the Costa del Sol is buying certainty: direct flights, many courses, standardised service. Laos sells something else — a round beside the Mekong, a UNESCO town, a calm capital and a country their golfing friends have not played. You go to Marrakech to play in the sun; you come to Laos to play inside a story.

Laos cannot win on volume and should not try. The comparison figures are worth stating precisely. The official Moroccan tourism website advertises twelve courses around Marrakech, from nine to thirty-six holes. Laos will not match those numbers this decade. It can copy their logic: golf never sells alone. It sells with the hotel, the transfer, the restaurant, the heritage, the spa, the property and the annual return.

8. When is the best time to play golf in Laos?

November to February is the only period that is reliably comfortable for eighteen holes in Laos. March and April combine strong heat with seasonal smoke in the north, which can reduce air quality and visibility. The main handicap of golf in Laos is not the quality of its best courses. It is the absence of unified, reliable information. There is no national portal with rates, opening hours and instant booking; public sources contradict each other on par, yardage and even phone numbers; and multilingual packages designed for Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Australian and European players remain rare. Contradictory data is not a detail — it erodes trust before the visitor has even landed.

Sustainability is the second open question. A tropical course consumes water and demands constant agronomic management. The future credibility of Thatluang, built on low ground raised above flood levels, will depend as much on drainage, water storage, grass selection and maintenance as on the Faldo name. New projects should publish their water sources, irrigation practice, plant protection products, biodiversity measures and waste management.

The commercial opportunity, on the other hand, is broader than green fees. It covers chauffeur transfers, hotels, short and medium-term villas, restaurants, corporate events, interpreters, concierge services, club rental, wellness, property cleaning and real-estate viewings.
