Four ways into Laos, five Friendship Bridges, two railway networks that do not touch each other, and one visa rule that decides everything. Here is how to choose, in the right order.
Travelling from Thailand to Laos is not one journey but a dozen. You can fly into Vientiane in eighty minutes, sleep your way north on an overnight train, roll across a Mekong bridge on a local bus, or drift down the river for two days. The right choice does not depend on which option is cheapest or fastest in the abstract. It depends on where in Laos you are actually going, and on whether the border post you have picked will accept the visa you hold.
That second point is where most trips go wrong. Laos operates eleven international checkpoints with Thailand, but the Lao eVisa is accepted at only nine entry points in the entire country — and several busy bridges are not among them. A traveller who books a cheap flight to Ubon Ratchathani expecting to eVisa their way into Pakse at Chong Mek is planning a journey that does not work as imagined.
This guide sets out every realistic route from Thailand into Laos as of September 2026, what each one costs in time as well as money, which paperwork applies where, and when to start booking. It is written from Vientiane, by people who cross this border regularly.
⚡ QUICK ANSWER
As of September 2026, there are four ways from Thailand to Laos: nonstop flights (Bangkok and Chiang Mai only), the overnight sleeper train from Bangkok Krung Thep Aphiwat to Vientiane Khamsavath, road crossings at eleven international checkpoints including five Thai–Lao Friendship Bridges, and the two-day Mekong slow boat from Huay Xai. Every foreign national needs a Lao visa — there is no visa exemption for most Western passports — plus the free Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF), completed within three days before arrival. Critically, the Lao eVisa is valid at only nine entry points nationwide, listed on the official portal laoevisa.gov.la.
📋 8 Key Takeaways
- Start from your Lao destination, not from Bangkok. Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Pakse each have a different best route, and they are not the same route.
- The Lao eVisa works at only 9 entry points in the whole country: three airports, three Friendship Bridges, the Boten land and rail checkpoints, and Khamsavath railway station in Vientiane.
- Friendship Bridge 3 (Nakhon Phanom–Thakhek), Friendship Bridge 5 (Bueng Kan–Paksan) and Vangtao/Chong Mek are not on the eVisa list. Plan a visa on arrival or a visa obtained in advance for those.
- Vientiane has two railway stations that are not connected to each other. Khamsavath receives the trains from Thailand; the Laos–China Railway station sits about 15 km northeast of the centre.
- There is no nonstop flight from Bangkok to Pakse or Savannakhet. Southern Laos is reached overland, or via a domestic Lao connection through Vientiane.
- Thai train tickets now open 90 days before departure, reduced from 180 days on 24 April 2026. Laos–China Railway tickets open only about 7 days ahead on official channels.
- Two digital forms, two directions. The LDIF is for entering Laos; the TDAC is for entering Thailand, mandatory since 1 May 2025 by air, land and sea.
- A rental contract signed in Thailand almost never permits taking the vehicle out of the country. Check before you drive to a bridge.

1. Which route from Thailand to Laos is right for your destination?
The first question is not « how do I get to Laos » but where in Laos am I going. Laos is 1,000 km long, its road network is slow, and its two railway systems serve different corridors. Choosing the entry point that matches your final destination saves more time than choosing the fastest vehicle.
The table below compares realistic door-to-door options. Door-to-door means everything: the taxi to the airport, the check-in, the border formalities and the transfer at the other end — not just the headline journey time on the ticket.
🧭 Decision matrix: choose by destination
| Your destination in Laos | Fastest realistic route | Lowest-cost route | Typical door-to-door time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vientiane | Nonstop flight Bangkok (BKK or DMK) to Wattay, 1h10–1h20 in the air | Overnight train Bangkok to Khamsavath, or bus via Udon Thani | 5–7 hours by air; 13–15 hours by train |
| Luang Prabang | Nonstop flight from Bangkok (2h10) or Chiang Mai (50 min) | Bangkok train to Vientiane, then Laos–China Railway | 5–6 hours by air; 16–20 hours by rail |
| Vang Vieng | Fly to Vientiane, then Laos–China Railway (about 1 hour) | Overnight train to Khamsavath, then rail or road | 8–10 hours by air and rail |
| Pakse and southern Laos | Fly Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani (about 1h15), then road via Vangtao/Chong Mek | Bangkok–Ubon Ratchathani train, then road | 7–9 hours by air and road |
| Savannakhet, Thakhek | Domestic Thai flight or bus to Mukdahan / Nakhon Phanom, then bridge crossing | Overnight Thai bus, then local crossing | 8–12 hours |
| Huay Xai and the Mekong | Fly or bus to Chiang Rai, then road to Chiang Khong and Friendship Bridge 4 | Bus from Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai | 6–10 hours to the border |
Two numbers from that table deserve repeating outside it, because they change plans. A flight from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang takes fifty minutes in the air, which is why northern Thailand is a far better launch point for northern Laos than Bangkok is. And there is no nonstop flight at all between Thailand and Pakse or Savannakhet, which is why southern Laos is an overland destination whatever your budget.
2. Can you fly nonstop from Thailand to Laos in 2026?
Yes, but on a short list of routes. Only two Lao airports receive scheduled nonstop flights from Thailand — Vientiane Wattay and Luang Prabang. Pakse and Savannakhet airports are served exclusively by Lao Airlines domestic flights from Vientiane, with no Thai destinations at all. Our complete 2026 guide to Laos airports sets out what to expect on arrival at each of them.
Bangkok’s two airports behave differently and this matters when you compare fares. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) carries the full-service carriers to Vientiane; Don Mueang (DMK) carries the low-cost service. They are 50 km apart, and a mistaken airport is a missed flight.
✈️ Nonstop flights from Thailand to Laos
| Route | Airlines operating | Frequency | Flight time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) → Vientiane (VTE) | Thai Airways, Lao Airlines | Up to 4 flights daily combined | About 1h20 |
| Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK) → Vientiane (VTE) | Thai AirAsia | 1–2 daily | About 1h10 |
| Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) → Luang Prabang (LPQ) | Bangkok Airways daily; Lao Airlines from 25 October 2026 | Daily, plus seasonal additions | About 2h10 |
| Chiang Mai (CNX) → Luang Prabang (LPQ) | Lao Airlines | 4 times weekly | About 50 minutes |
| Bangkok → Pakse (PKZ) or Savannakhet (ZVK) | None | No nonstop service | — |
Route data compiled from scheduled-service listings in September 2026. Airline schedules in this region change seasonally; confirm the operating days before you commit to onward arrangements.
🔁 The combination most travellers overlook
A Thai domestic flight followed by a short land crossing often beats every international option on both price and time. Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani is served by five carriers — Thai AirAsia, Thai Vietjet, Nok Air, Thai Airways and Thai Lion Air — from both Bangkok airports, in about an hour and fifteen minutes. From Ubon Ratchathani, Pakse is roughly two hours by road through the Vangtao–Chong Mek checkpoint. The same logic applies to Udon Thani for Vientiane, and Nakhon Phanom for Thakhek.
🌿 SALITHYNA advice, offered as a recommendation rather than a rule
When comparing an international flight against a domestic flight plus a border transfer, price the whole chain — including the airport transfer, the border wait and the taxi at the far end. On the southern routes, the combination usually wins.
3. Is there a direct train from Bangkok to Vientiane, and which station does it use?
Yes. Since 19 July 2024, passenger trains run directly from Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal across the Mekong to Vientiane Khamsavath station, ending the era when every rail traveller had to stop at Nong Khai and find their own way across the bridge.
The overnight service is operated as Rapid trains 133 and 134, with a journey of roughly twelve to thirteen hours in each direction. Accommodation typically includes an air-conditioned second-class sleeping car, second-class seats and third-class seats, at fares that the rail reference site The Man in Seat 61 lists in the range of 281 baht for third class to 874 baht for a lower sleeper berth. A second daily pair, Rapid 147/148, links Udon Thani and Nong Khai with Khamsavath, which is useful if you have flown into Udon Thani.
⚠️ TWO STATIONS, ONE CITY, NO RAIL LINK
Vientiane Khamsavath station serves the trains from Thailand. Vientiane railway station on the Laos–China Railway is a completely separate facility about 15 km northeast of the city centre, opened on 3 December 2021. The two stations are not connected to each other by rail. Travellers who book a Laos–China Railway ticket and go to Khamsavath — or the reverse — miss their train. Allow a taxi transfer of roughly 30 to 45 minutes between them.
One further correction worth making, because older guides still repeat it: Thanaleng station, the former terminus on the Lao side of Friendship Bridge 1, closed to passenger service when Khamsavath opened and now handles freight only. If a booking or an article sends you to Thanaleng for a passenger train, it is out of date.
🎫 Lao immigration at Khamsavath
Lao immigration formalities for the international train are processed at Khamsavath station itself. The official Lao eVisa portal lists Khamsavath Railway Station among its nine accepted entry points, alongside Wattay, Luang Prabang and Pakse airports, Friendship Bridges I, II and IV, and the Boten land and railway checkpoints. This is a relatively recent addition and some third-party guides written in 2024 still state the opposite.
4. How do you connect to the Laos–China Railway for Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang?
The Laos–China Railway is the fastest way to move north inside Laos, and it is the reason a rail journey from Bangkok to Luang Prabang is now realistic rather than heroic. Trains reach Vang Vieng in roughly an hour from Vientiane and Luang Prabang in about two, against eight or more hours by road.
The connection is not seamless, and this is the single most common planning error on the whole Thailand-to-Laos journey. Arriving at Khamsavath in the morning on train 133, you must cross the city by taxi to Vientiane railway station, about 15 km northeast, and board a separate service on a separate network with a separate ticket.
Booking is the other constraint. Laos–China Railway tickets open on official channels — the LCR Ticket app, station counters and in-town ticket offices — only about seven days before departure. Resellers will accept a booking request months in advance, but that request is not a ticket. The seat does not exist in the system until sales open.
📌 A registered request is not an issued ticket, and an issued ticket is not a guaranteed seat
This distinction matters most on the Laos–China Railway, where the seven-day window collides with peak season demand around Lao New Year, Boun That Luang and the Christmas period. Prepare names, passport details, dates and preferences before sales open, and hold a road alternative in reserve. No agency — including ours — can promise a seat on a train whose sales have not opened.
📅 Booking windows, side by side
| Service | When sales open | Where to book |
|---|---|---|
| Thai trains (reserved seats and sleepers) | 90 days before departure, reduced from 180 days on 24 April 2026 | SRT D-Ticket, stations, agencies |
| Laos–China Railway | About 7 days before departure on official channels | LCR Ticket app, station and in-town counters |
| Flights Thailand–Laos | Standard airline windows, typically 11–12 months | Airline sites, agencies |
| Lao eVisa | Apply at least 5 days before travel; about 3 working days to process | laoevisa.gov.la only |
To put the two rail numbers in plain prose, because they drive the whole itinerary: your Thai train can be locked in ninety days out, but your Lao train cannot be confirmed until about a week before you travel. Build the trip around that asymmetry rather than discovering it at the counter.
5. Which Thailand–Laos land borders can foreigners actually use?
The Department of Immigration of Lao PDR lists eleven international checkpoints on the Thai border. Five are Friendship Bridges over the Mekong; the others are road crossings, most of them in Xayabuli province, plus the Golden Triangle checkpoint in Bokeo and Vangtao in Champasak.
The newest is the Fifth Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, inaugurated on 25 December 2025 and opened to public use on 27 December 2025. The 1,350-metre structure links Bueng Kan province in Thailand with Bolikhamxay province in Laos, connecting Thailand’s Highway 244 to Lao Route 13, at a total investment of THB 3.93 billion — about USD 126.3 million, as reported by the Laotian Times.
🌉 Thailand–Laos international checkpoints and eVisa acceptance
| Checkpoint | Thai side | Lao side | Lao eVisa accepted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friendship Bridge 1 | Nong Khai | Vientiane Capital | Yes |
| Friendship Bridge 2 | Mukdahan | Savannakhet | Yes |
| Friendship Bridge 3 | Nakhon Phanom | Thakhek, Khammouane | No |
| Friendship Bridge 4 | Chiang Khong | Huay Xai, Bokeo | Yes |
| Friendship Bridge 5 | Bueng Kan | Paksan, Bolikhamxay | No |
| Vangtao | Chong Mek, Ubon Ratchathani | Champasak (for Pakse) | No |
| Golden Triangle | Chiang Saen area | Bokeo | No |
| Namngeun | Huay Kon, Nan | Xayabuli | No |
| Namheuang Friendship Bridge | Tha Li, Loei | Kenthao, Xayabuli | No |
| Phoudou | Phu Doo | Pak Lay, Xayabuli | No |
| Pangmon | Ban Huak, Phayao | Xayabuli | No |
Checkpoint list from the Department of Immigration of Lao PDR; eVisa acceptance from the official Lao eVisa portal, both consulted on 9 September 2026. Visa on arrival availability is decided separately from eVisa acceptance and depends on your nationality — verify your own passport against the official immigration site before travelling.
The practical consequence is worth stating in words as well as in the table: only three of the eleven Thai border checkpoints accept the Lao eVisa, and the three that do are Friendship Bridges 1, 2 and 4. Every other crossing requires either a visa obtained in advance or a visa on arrival, if your nationality is eligible for one there.
👁️ Observed practice, not an official rule
At the smaller Xayabuli-province posts, immigration staffing is thin, opening hours are shorter than at the bridges, and onward transport on the Lao side can be scarce. A listed checkpoint proves that the border is open. It does not prove that a bus will be waiting.
6. How do buses and split journeys across the border really work?
Almost no « direct bus from Bangkok to Vientiane » is a single vehicle for the whole trip. What you are buying is a chain: a Thai coach or minibus, a Thai exit stamp, the bridge shuttle, a Lao entry stamp, and a final transfer. Understanding the chain is what stops the journey feeling like a series of unpleasant surprises.
At Friendship Bridge 1, pedestrians are not permitted to walk across. A shuttle bus carries passengers over the bridge between the two immigration posts. Beyond it, established international services run frequently in both directions. Travelfish publishes the Lao-side timetable: Vientiane to Udon Thani at 08:00, 09:00, 10:30, 11:30, 14:00, 15:00, 16:30 and 18:00 for around 22,000 kip, taking two to three hours, and Vientiane to Nong Khai at 07:30, 09:30, 12:40, 14:30, 15:30 and 18:00 for around 15,000 kip in about an hour. Services in the Thailand-to-Laos direction run at a broadly comparable frequency, but the departure board at Udon Thani or Nong Khai is the only reliable timetable on the day. On these services the bus waits while passengers clear passport control.
🚌 What to confirm before you buy any cross-border bus ticket
- The exact departure terminal. Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Udon Thani each have more than one, and they are far apart.
- The exact arrival point in Laos. Vientiane’s Central Bus Station is walkable from the old city; the Northern and Southern terminals are not.
- Whether the same vehicle continues after the border, or whether you change to a different operator on the Lao side.
- The realistic border wait, which lengthens sharply at weekends, at Lao New Year in April and around Thai public holidays.
- Whether long-haul services to Luang Prabang or Vang Vieng are actually running this season. Several historic long-distance routes have been quietly reduced since the Laos–China Railway opened.
🌿 SALITHYNA advice
Treat any operator who describes a multi-leg chain as « direct » as a reason to ask more questions, not fewer. The word usually means « one ticket », not « one vehicle ».
7. Can you reach Luang Prabang by boat from Thailand?
Not directly, and the distinction matters. The famous two-day Mekong slow boat does not start in Thailand. It starts at Huay Xai, which is in Laos, in Bokeo province. Thailand’s side of that crossing is Chiang Khong. You cross Friendship Bridge 4 by shuttle first, complete Lao immigration, and only then board a boat.
The public slow boat runs Huay Xai to Pakbeng on day one, overnights in Pakbeng, and continues Pakbeng to Luang Prabang on day two. Each leg takes roughly six to eight hours. Tickets bought directly at the navigation office pier typically run in the region of 200,000 to 250,000 kip for the full journey, with agents adding a markup. Accommodation in Pakbeng is not included and ranges from simple fan rooms to air-conditioned guesthouses.
Organised Mekong cruises — multi-day, cabin-based, with guiding and meals — are a completely different product from the public slow boat, with different pricing, different boats and different river conditions. Comparing their prices directly is meaningless.
⚠️ ON SPEEDBOATS
The Mekong speedboats cover the same route in a single day. They are also loud, uncomfortable and have a documented accident record. Expat Laos SALITHYNA does not recommend them to clients, and we say so plainly rather than presenting speed as the only variable. This is our judgement, not a regulation.
One further practical point: immigration offices at the Huay Xai–Chiang Khong crossing close in the late afternoon. Arriving after closing means an unplanned night on whichever side you happen to be.
8. Can you drive your own or a rented vehicle from Thailand into Laos?
Sometimes, and the paperwork is the hard part rather than the driving. Taking a vehicle across requires proof of ownership or written authorisation from the owner, a rental agreement that explicitly permits export if the vehicle is rented, insurance valid in Laos, temporary import documentation at customs, and a driving permit accepted by Lao authorities. Each element is checked at the border post, and each checkpoint applies the rules with its own local practice.
The most frequent mistake is assuming that a Thai rental contract allows the car to leave Thailand. Most do not, and arriving at a bridge with a prohibited vehicle ends the journey there. The same caution applies to two wheels: our guide to renting, buying and riding a scooter legally in Laos covers the licence and insurance side once you are across.
For private transfers booked through an agency, ask one specific question before paying: does the same vehicle and driver cross the border, or does a Lao driver take over on the far side? Both arrangements exist, both are legitimate, and they produce very different experiences with luggage and waiting time.
9. Which visa do you need, and where is the Lao eVisa actually accepted?
Laos requires a visa from most foreign nationals. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office states plainly in its Laos entry-requirements guidance, updated 31 August 2026, that « You must have a visa to visit Laos », and that a passport must be valid for at least six months from arrival with at least two blank pages.
Four routes to a visa exist, and they are not interchangeable:
📄 The four visa routes, and where each works
- Lao eVisa — applied for online at the official portal laoevisa.gov.la. Single entry. The FCDO advises applying at least five days ahead; the portal states processing usually takes about three working days after payment. The fee depends on nationality and is calculated on the portal itself. Valid at nine entry points only.
- Visa on arrival — available at many, but not all, checkpoints, and eligibility depends on nationality. Available at Wattay, Luang Prabang and Pakse airports and at the major bridges. Confirm your own passport against the Department of Immigration of Lao PDR checkpoint pages.
- Visa obtained in advance at a Lao embassy or consulate — the safest option for the smaller checkpoints, and the only realistic option for nationalities excluded from visa on arrival.
- Exemption — applies to a limited set of nationalities, largely regional. Most Western passports are not exempt. Do not assume.
The nine eVisa entry points, as published by the official portal, are: Wattay International Airport, Luang Prabang International Airport, Pakse International Airport, Lao–Thai Friendship Bridge I in Vientiane Capital, Lao–Thai Friendship Bridge II in Savannakhet, Lao–Thai Friendship Bridge IV in Bokeo, Boten International Checkpoint, Boten Railway Station, and Khamsavath Railway Station in Vientiane Capital. Nine is the whole list — every other entry point requires a different visa route.
🖥️ Two digital forms, in two directions
Travellers routinely confuse these, and they serve opposite journeys.
| Form | Applies to | When to file | Replaces a visa? |
|---|---|---|---|
| LDIF — Lao Digital Immigration Form | Foreign nationals entering Laos; the FCDO notes it is in force at the main international checkpoints | Within 3 days before arrival, and again 3 days before departure | No. The LDIF does not replace visa requirements |
| TDAC — Thailand Digital Arrival Card | All non-Thai nationals entering Thailand by air, land or sea | Within 3 days before arrival, mandatory since 1 May 2025 | No. Separate from any Thai visa or exemption |
Both forms are digital and free, and both must be completed within three days of arrival in their respective directions. If you are travelling Thailand to Laos and back, you will need both — the LDIF on the way in and the TDAC on the way home, as set out in the Tourism Authority of Thailand guideline. Our step-by-step Lao visa guide for expats and travellers walks through the application screens in detail, and our September 2026 round-up of ASEAN visa changes tracks what has moved on the Thai side.
An official rule that catches people out: the existence of a bridge does not imply that every visa formality is available on it. Friendship Bridge 5 opened in December 2025 and is fully international, but it does not appear on the eVisa list. The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs makes the same point in its Laos country advice, noting that the land crossings issuing a visa on arrival or accepting an electronic visa are limited.
10. When should you book, and what can SALITHYNA do for you?
Booking a Thailand-to-Laos journey is a sequencing problem, not a shopping problem. The pieces become available at different moments, and the ones that sell out first are not the ones that open first.
⏱️ A workable sequence
- Three to four months out — fix your Lao destination and therefore your entry point. Book international flights if you are flying.
- Ninety days out — Thai reserved-seat and sleeper tickets open. For the Bangkok–Vientiane overnight train in high season, this is the moment.
- Two to three weeks out — apply for the Lao eVisa if your entry point accepts it, or finalise your embassy visa. Confirm that your chosen checkpoint matches your visa type.
- Seven days out — Laos–China Railway sales open. Book the moment they do if you are travelling in peak season.
- Three days out — file the LDIF for Laos. File the TDAC before your return to Thailand.
🌿 Planning your journey from Thailand to Laos?
Your trip is prepared before sales open. Some train tickets cannot be confirmed until the departure date approaches. By sending us your itinerary early enough, Expat Laos SALITHYNA can organise your request with our partner agencies, check the connections against your visa and entry point, and prepare alternatives. Issuance remains subject to the opening of sales and to seat availability — we do not promise a seat before it exists.

❓ Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct train from Bangkok to Vientiane?
Yes. Rapid trains 133 and 134 run overnight between Bangkok Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal and Vientiane Khamsavath station, a journey of roughly twelve to thirteen hours. The service began on 19 July 2024. Lao immigration is processed at Khamsavath station on arrival.
Which station in Vientiane does the train from Thailand arrive at?
Khamsavath station, in Xaysetha district, close to the city. This is not the same as Vientiane railway station on the Laos–China Railway, which is about 15 km northeast of the centre and serves trains to Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and China. The two stations are not connected by rail, and a taxi transfer between them takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes.
Where is the Lao eVisa accepted?
At nine entry points only, as published on the official portal laoevisa.gov.la: Wattay, Luang Prabang and Pakse airports; Lao–Thai Friendship Bridges I, II and IV; Boten International Checkpoint; Boten Railway Station; and Khamsavath Railway Station. Friendship Bridge 3 at Thakhek, Friendship Bridge 5 at Paksan and the Vangtao crossing for Pakse are not on the list.
How do I get to Pakse from Thailand?
Overland, because there is no nonstop flight between Thailand and Pakse. The usual route is a domestic flight or train from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani, then road transport to the Vangtao–Chong Mek checkpoint and on to Pakse, about two hours from the border. Because Vangtao does not accept the eVisa, arrange a visa on arrival or an embassy visa before travelling.
When do train tickets go on sale?
Thai reserved-seat and sleeper tickets open 90 days before departure, reduced from 180 days by the State Railway of Thailand on 24 April 2026. Laos–China Railway tickets open about seven days ahead on official channels. Resellers accept requests earlier, but a request registered with a reseller is not an issued ticket.
Does the slow boat to Luang Prabang start in Thailand?
No. It starts at Huay Xai, in Bokeo province, Laos. Travellers coming from Thailand cross Friendship Bridge 4 from Chiang Khong by shuttle bus, clear Lao immigration, and then board. The public boat takes two days with an overnight stop in Pakbeng.
Do I need the LDIF as well as a visa?
Yes. The Lao Digital Immigration Form is a separate, free requirement completed digitally within three days before arrival and again three days before departure. The UK FCDO states explicitly that the LDIF does not replace visa requirements. It is not a visa and cannot be used as one.
Can I walk across a Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge?
No. Pedestrians are not permitted on the Friendship Bridges. A shuttle bus operates between the two immigration posts, at a small fare paid in either kip or baht depending on which side you board.
